Rep. King attends, moderates property tax event

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 1, 2026) – Recently, State Rep. Joanna King (R-Middlebury) was the moderator for a community property tax discussion at the Zimmer Biomet Center Lake Pavillion in Warsaw.

Over 200 Hoosiers attended to get an update on efforts to provide property tax relief and reform. King said Indiana lawmakers have worked to keep taxes low for hardworking Hoosiers, cutting taxes every year over the last decade, including advancing major property tax relief legislation last year. Under Senate Enrolled Act 1 passed in 2025, homeowners are expected to save more than $1.3 billion in property taxes over three years.

"It's encouraging to see constituents and the community get out and attend events like this to make their voices heard," King said. "This was a very lengthy discussion and we're not done. There is more to do to lower property taxes and make sure Hoosiers can keep more of their money as we continue to make Indiana the best state to live, work and raise a family."

King said the 2025 law provides increased credits and deductions for all homeowners, as well as additional relief for fixed-income seniors. It phases in a two-thirds property tax deduction for all homesteads, as well as a new one-third property tax deduction for other residential properties and farmers. By 2031, homeowners will only pay property taxes on one-third of their homes' value.

Also discussed at the event was Indiana's Pre-1996 Teachers' Retirement Fund. Recently, the Interim Study Committee on Pension Management Oversight announced that the fund is expected to be fully funded a decade earlier than projected – providing a major savings for Hoosier taxpayers.

The Pre-96 fund supports pension payments for Hoosier teachers hired before July 1, 1995. The fund supports nearly 52,000 retired teachers and will support approximately 3,900 additional currently active teachers.

King said additional payments on top of the annual appropriations will make the fund fully vested by 2028 instead of 2038, saving future taxpayers the need to cover over $1 billion annually in defined benefit costs.

"Indiana's fiscal responsibility continues to provide savings for taxpayers," King said. "I appreciated hearing from the community this week and look forward to continue advancing efforts that deliver relief and keep life affordable for residents."

Indiana continues to maintain one of the lowest debt burdens among all states. According to S&P Global Ratings, Indiana has the fourth-lowest net tax-supported debt per capita in the country.
