MIAMI, FL, UNITED STATES, September 18, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- BluKap today announced the inaugural BluKap Ocean Biotechnology 50 (BOBI50), a curated group of 50 companies illustrating the breadth and growing maturity of the global ocean-biotechnology ecosystem.

BOBI50 was created using BluKap ATLAS™, BluKap’s proprietary AI-powered intelligence platform built to identify, research, analyze and track companies, technologies and assets derived from, or inspired by, ocean biodiversity.

ATLAS™ currently tracks more than 770 ocean-biotechnology companies across 50+ countries, spanning 10 technology and end-market categories, as well as more than 650 investor entities, over 400 researched financing and acquisition events, and close to 1,000 documented investor participations.

Together, the data reveal an industry that is considerably broader, more global and more commercially developed than conventional definitions of marine biotechnology often suggest.

A hidden innovation ecosystem

Ocean biotechnology rarely appears as a single industry category.

A molecule discovered from a marine organism may become a pharmaceutical. A marine collagen can be developed into a medical device or food supplement. The same algae can underpin an agricultural input, methane-reduction technology or sustainable material. Marine enzymes can enter diagnostics or industrial manufacturing.

Once commercialized, these technologies are generally classified by their destination markets rather than by their biological origin. As a result, much of the economic activity created by ocean biotechnology remains difficult to identify through conventional industry classifications.

“The ocean is a 4-billion-year-old biological innovation platform,” said Henry Gazay, Co-Founder and General Partner of BluKap. “This biology has been tested by time and offers distinctive properties that can be developed sustainably across pharmaceuticals, materials, food, agriculture, aquaculture and industrial biotechnology. We built ATLAS™ because there was nowhere we could systematically track that innovation from lab to market or continuously assess the potential of companies harnessing marine organisms, molecules and biological processes.”

An AI brain for ocean biotechnology

The ocean-biotechnology ecosystem is highly fragmented. Relevant companies often emerge from universities, marine research institutes and specialized scientific communities across dozens of countries, while the intelligence needed to understand them is scattered across scientific publications, patents, corporate registries, financing announcements, technology-transfer records and local-language sources.

Traditional venture databases capture pieces of that landscape. ATLAS™ was built to understand the system as a whole.

ATLAS™ continuously combines external information with BluKap’s proprietary research and due-diligence findings. At its core is a regularly refreshed base of companies, investors and underlying assets, including patents, proprietary technologies, know-how, biological resources, licenses and intellectual property.

The platform analyzes how technologies are progressing, where intellectual property is accumulating, where capital is flowing, how companies compare with relevant peers and how individual opportunities evolve over time. BluKap’s proprietary diligence is fed back into ATLAS™, allowing opportunities to be continuously assessed and scored against BluKap’s investment framework.

The result is an evolving sourcing, intelligence and decision-support system designed to identify promising ocean-biotechnology assets and companies wherever they emerge.

From 770+ companies to the BOBI50

The BluKap Ocean Biotechnology 50 is the first major public expression of that intelligence.

The inaugural edition focuses on companies that have reached Series A or later, including growth-stage, publicly listed and acquired businesses. Earlier-stage companies tracked by ATLAS™ were excluded from consideration.

By organizing companies according to the technologies and biological assets they are commercializing, BOBI50 provides a map of where value is being created across the ocean-biotechnology landscape and how ocean biology is being translated into therapeutics, medical technologies, food, aquaculture, agriculture, materials and industrial applications.

“We wanted to make the ecosystem visible,” said Jean-François Trecco, Co-Founder and General Partner of BluKap. “BOBI50 is not a ranking of our investment targets. It shows where the assets are, how they are being commercialized, where capital is concentrating and which parts of the ecosystem are reaching meaningful maturity.”

The release of BOBI50 ahead of Climate Week NYC 2026 reflects BluKap’s view that ocean biotechnology is increasingly relevant not only to biodiversity and marine conservation, but also to technologies transforming health, food, agriculture, materials and industrial production.
